The life and journey of Dr. Sant Kumar Chaudhary

Early life

Dr. Sant Kumar Chaudhary was born in Chanpura-Basaith village, Benipatti block, Madhubani district, in the Mithila region of Bihar. He grew up in a family with a quiet, settled commitment to public life: his grandfather took part in India’s freedom movement and founded the school in their village, and his father, Shri Dukh Mohan Chaudhary, served as a school teacher.

Education

His schooling began at the government school in his native village. He went on to study at C. M. Science College, Darbhanga, completing his Intermediate and graduation by 1979, and in 1980 moved to Delhi to pursue a B. Pharma degree.

Early career — From Government service to Founding the Trusts & Societies

Dr. Chaudhary’s working life began in the Government Service. He served first with the Government of Maharashtra Secretariat as PS to the then Chief Minister Late Vasant Dada Patil, and was later appointed Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Governor of Rajasthan. He eventually resigned from the Government Service to devote himself, full-time, to the institution-building work that would become the Shankara Group of Institutions.

During this transition he drew spiritual guidance from the Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya Pujya His Holiness Shri Jayendra Saraswati Ji and His Holiness Swami Vijayendra Saraswati Ji — the connection that gave the family of institutions their names and their religious-cultural frame of reference.

Founding the S.K. Chaudhary Educational Trust (1993)

In 1993, Dr. Sant Kumar Chaudhary founded the S.K. Chaudhary Educational Trust, a service body created with one stated aim — “to extend helping hands towards those regions that most require it.” From the outset the Trust was conceived not as a single college but as a multi-pronged effort spanning education, healthcare, agriculture and rural development.

The Trust’s very first institution was an Intermediate/ Degree level College in his native village, Chanpura-Basaith. In 1996 another trust was formed in the name of “Shri Kanchi Kama Koti Peetam Sewa Trust” under which an Eye Hospital was established in Madhubani on 1st May 1997, named after the Shankaracharya — the institution that today operates as the Kanchi Shankara  Hospital (Shankar Netralaya).

Today, under this umbrella, several institutions of Education / Technical Education, Healthcare, Agriculture and much more are spread across the different states of India viz. Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pardesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu et al.

Building the Shankara Group of  Institutions

Under his leadership the Trust established the Shankara Group of Institutions at Kukas, Jaipur — a cluster of professional colleges covering Engineering (B. Tech, MCA, BCA), Management (MBA, PGDM, BBA), Teacher-education (B.Ed, D.ElEd), and Nursing.

Beyond the classroom

His work has never been confined to the campus. The Trust he leads also runs the Kanchi Shankara Eye Hospital, Madhubani, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Chanpura-Basaith, and a portfolio of watershed-development, soil-testing and seed-multiplication programmes serving the farming communities.

Today

Dr. Sant Kumar Chaudhary continues to serve as Chairman cum Managing Trustee of the Trusts and chairs both the Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors of the Shankara Group of Institutions. The Trust now runs around 51 Institutions / Organisations across India — of which roughly 35 are Educational — and has partnerships extending into Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

A Foundation in Public Service

Service to the State, Before Service to the Society.

I do not merely run schools, colleges and hospitals; I strive to build better citizens. In our institutions, we provide a path to self-reliance through education, healthcare and community empowerment.
